Be Open to Tennis and Get Your Racquet On!

Burnt Bridge Tennis Club is exciting to be hosting Open Court sessions on Tuesday nights, starting 28th of Jan with some food and drink supplied. These sessions are for anyone, whether you can play, used to play, or your tennis knowledge goes as far as naming Federer and saying the AO is on channel 9, we would love for you to come and get your racquet on!

Take a look at the events on our Facebook or the play.tennis.com.au for more information and book a venue that tickles your fancy! To go straight to booking at Burnt Bridge, click here.

The 90-minute session aims to have participants embracing casual tennis in a relaxed format. The evening is made up of two parts; 30 minutes off-court with food and drinks, and 60 minutes on-court time for swinging, slamming and smiling, with a great soundtrack pumping through the evening.

Tennis is a much-loved sport in Australia and research has shown there are a huge number of ex-tennis players who would be keen to pick up a racquet again but haven’t felt they could. Now they can. Open Court Sessions provides a fun option to get back into the sport where the social side is just as important as the on-court activities.

Location: Burnt Bridge Tennis Club, Peter Vergers Reserve, 537 Maroondah Highway Ringwood 3134. Opposite the Burnt Bridge Shopping centre

Date: Tuesday, January 28th, 2020

Time: 7:00pm – 8:30pm

Cost: $10

If players do not have gear or equipment, no worries. Burnt Bridge Tennis Club provide racquets and balls, plus the first Open Court Sessions event will include spot prizes for players who are getting sporty and social.

It’s time to get your racquet on. Make a racket, have some fun – it’s tennis time.

The Annual General Meeting of BBTC was held on Sunday 28th July and attended by 12 Club members and the Tennis Victoria Representative for the Outer East, Danielle Cornwall.

Reports were received from the President, Kerry Stephens, who outlined the Club’s activities and thanked all committee members especially the retiring Senior Convenor, Debra Chasteauneuf and the coach, Daniel Kittelty.  Peter Arnot presented the Treasurer’s report giving an account of the Club’s Income and Expenditure over the last 12 months. Income is derived from membership fees, Night Tennis payments and fundraising. The main recurring Items of expenditure are Court maintenance, rental to MCC and electricity.  The overall financial position of the club is sound and membership fees will be unchanged for 2019/2020. Copies of these reports will be posted on the Club noticeboard in the next few days. The club currently has 132 financial members and 10 Life Members which is an increase of 21 members from June 2018.  This increase is largely due to the work of our coach, Daniel who continues to attract young people to the club and to the Membership Scsecretary, Glenda.

Election of Office Bearers produced a largely unchanged committee who were elected unopposed.  Jan Kennedy will take over the position of Mid-Week Ladies Convenor as well as Vice-President while Cynthia Scott remains on the General Committee.  The position of Senior Convenor remains vacant after the resignation of Debra Chasteauneuf.

It was with great pleasure that the meeting elected Glenda Nicholson to Life Membership of the Club.  Glenda has been a member of the club since 1990 and a committee member for over 15 years. She has worked as Junior Convenor while her children were involved in the Junior Program and has continued to work for the club organising the Annual Trivia Nights, and Grant Applications and currently serves as Membership Secretary.  Glenda was presented with a certificate and her name is inscribed on the Life Members’ Shield to the left of the main door to the clubhouse.

The completion of the Hot Shots court was discussed.  Council has agreed to correct the errors made in the previous construction and we have agreed on a contractor.  Danielle spoke on the benefits of having a small court such as a Hot Shots Court to assist the very young players learning the game.

Other matters raised which will be considered in the next few months were the provision of permanent shade over the seats behind Courts 5 and 6, the disposal of the chairs in the BBQ area and the purchase of a new TV.

Upcoming Dates for your Diaries:  Working Bee Sunday 20th October,  Family Day Sunday 27th October and Christmas Breakup Sunday 15th December.

The President thanked all members for attending and invited them to stay and enjoy refreshments.

22nd June 2019 Trivia Night

Fifty members and their families and friends enjoyed a great night’s entertainment in the Clubhouse on Saturday 22nd June.  It was also great to see Junior members and their families enjoying the fun.  As usual, Glenda and David Nicholson produced a variety of interesting questions and competitions to keep the evening flowing.  Identifying the pictures posted on the noticeboards proved too difficult for most of us and the True or False got us up and moving.

The Trivia Competition was won by the table organised by Cynthia Scott, our mid-week Ladies Convenor and all players received dinner vouchers at local restaurants as prizes.  The Grand Raffle with a first prize of a $100 voucher from Kmart and about 60 other prizes valued from $10 to $50 saw a record number of tickets purchased and the first prize was won by member Jill Drew, a Mid-week Ladies player.  By the end of the draw, each table had won several prizes.  Other Prize winners for the night were Who am I? – Jill Drew; What am I? – Arthur Yuill; Music Bingo – Hayley Cole.

A hot supper was served and the evening finished with tea and coffee and cakes and buns donated by committee members and the two bakeries at Burnt Bridge.  One member who attended with her family commented on how well the evening had been run and she couldn’t believe how quickly the evening had gone.  We finished at about 11.30pm.

Many thanks go to Glenda and David for organising the Trivia competition and to Bev, Cynthia, Jan, Deb, Denise, Kerry and Lea who organised and donated raffle prizes and helped set up and clean up before and after the event.  Thanks also to Andrew Bencina (winterhillmusic.com.au) for setting up the speakers for Music Bingo and microphone and a big thank you to the members who came along and supported our fundraising.

Thanks also to our many sponsors for their generous help.  There is a list of sponsors posted at the clubhouse and on the web site.  Please give them your support.

The Trivia Night raised over $900 (~$500 from the raffle) towards the completion of the Hot Shots Court.

The Trivia Night on August 24th was enjoyed by more than 70 BBTC members, friends and families.  Many thanks to Glenda and David Nicholson who again provided an interesting and entertaining set of Trivia questions.  The Trivia Competition was won by the Daborn/Yen/Weedon table who demonstrated their wide knowledge of Trivia in a narrow win.  Thanks to our generous sponsors who provided the many prizes for the raffle.  We raised just over $1000 towards the Hitting wall and Hot Shots Court which is now completed.  Watch out for the announcement of the Grand Opening/Family day in October.  Thanks to all members who supported the Trivia Night and Raffle.

Australian Open Club Fast 4 Competition

On Australia Day the BBTC team, Lucy and Phil Daborn competed against Bundoora TC in the Fast 4 competition urged on by a noisy 4 Woman Cheer Squad.

Fast 4 competition 2

In spite of a great performance by Lucy in the women’s singles and a spirited effort by both players in the entertaining doubles, we were defeated. Phil and Lucy attended the draw for the major Prize of $5000 on 30th January.

Fast 4 competition 5

Each club wrote their club’s name on a tennis ball and the winning ball was drawn by Daria Gavrilova, again we were unlucky. However, Phil and Lucy enjoyed their Australian Open Experience very much and received an Aus Open merchandise pack for their efforts.

The club thanks them for competing on our behalf.
